In 1945, Von Neumann created an architecture based on a single-memory, stored program approach. This architecture has done us well for many decades, but its reign may be ending. Along with this, Gordon Moore defined a law that outlined that transistor densities would double every 12–18 months:
Basically, the increase in transistor counts on chips has allowed us to scale up our processing. But, with a drive to 2 nanometer transistors, we are nearing the limit for the size of a silicon transistor. So how do we advance? Well, quantum computers and processing may be the future.
Well, last week, NVIDIA’s capitalisation increased by the whole value of Coca-Cola in a single day. Why? Because of its CUDA core and its ability to scale processing over multiple cores. While the rise in the usage of CUDA is initially typically related to Bitcoin mining and hash password cracking, it is the focus on AI that is pushing forward the requirement for increasing computing levels. However, NVIDIA knows that they need to build on their base and advance into other areas. And, so one of these is the move into quantum computing [here]:
