Identity in the Hands of the Citizen

And so, the UK is finally rolling out a “sort of” identity scheme, but do they really have the right to control our identity and reveal everything about it to others? The answer is likely to be no, but governments will still attempt to maintain control over their citizens’ identities (just as they have for centuries, as they need to collect taxes and often spy on their citizens).

Overall, governments should provide identity attestation and not be the owner of a citizen’s identity, as government processes for identity checking are likely to be more reliable than simply showing a utility bill as part of proof of address. The UK’s approach to this is flawed, as they want to be the owner of a citizen identity wallet, and not citizens having their own identity wallets which can contain government attestations.
