Overall, there are so many companies that could have caused outages with their core data-gathering agents, but CloudStrike is now in the firing line for so many in the cybersecurity industry. And, so, a file of just 4.3 MB has caused so many problems around the world [here]:
It’s a risk, of course, for many cybersecurity companies, as their software needs to integrate deeply into the core of the system and thus hook onto running processes. These companies thrive on captured data, and in analysing both well and badly behaved programs. With Splunk (now owned by Cisco), we see data gatherers that will integrate strongly into system logs. And, as much of the core operating system of Windows is still written in C/C++, there are so many opportunities for exceptions not to be caught.
